Honey bee approaching cherry blossom in North Devon - March

Busy Bees!

I have a small confession to make, in a previous entry (Bees Gone) I thought my last hive had perished.

Well good news! A couple of weeks ago I noticed a couple of bees flying from the hive and returning with pollen. It looked like cherry blossom pollen, perhaps from the blackthorn that had started to flower in the hedge rows.

The fact they were returning with pollen, is likely to be an indication that the hive has a queen present and the queen maybe laying.

Anyway, the last couple of days, which have been very warm and bright, the bees have been flying and coming back with loads of blossom. Also, the cherry blossom and plum blossom in the orchard are covered in bees.

So, fingers crossed, for mild dry weather over the next few weeks. The buds of blossom on the fruit trees is looking good (probably due to the hot summer last year) so if all goes to plan, a bumper spring flow of nectar and possibly a spring harvest of honey?
