Hazel nuts ripening on a tree in September North Devon

Nutty September

Just picked my nuts! Well Hazel nuts, the Walnuts will come later in the year.

I have planted up a little nuttery (an orchard where nuts are grown) in one corner of our field with cultivated varieties of nuts. Currently Walnuts, Hazel Nuts and Horse Chestnuts. These being my favorite, I probably won’t plant anymore.

Hazelnuts just picked, some with their husks still on.

The Walnuts and some of the Hazel nut trees are now about four years old. Even though I have had a few walnuts over the past years, I have only had a couple of handful of hazel nuts. This year, I have managed to pick a full basket!

Once picked, I have taken off the outer husk, to leave the nut. Now I have them drying/ripening in the utility room.

I think some of these will be saved for Christmas, and some, I will add to my homemade mincemeat.
